Atlanta Journal -Constitution - The results of the Winthrop Southern Focus Survey show that 46 percent of all Southerners now hold a “somewhat or very unfavorable” view toward the Confederate battle flag. But the degree to which a Southerner has unfavorable feelings about Confederate iconography has much to do with the individual’s race.
With the battle flag question, 58 percent of African-Americans said they view the flag unfavorably, while only 44 percent of the white respondents felt that way.

Resolution of cognitive dissonance. People want to believe they're good, law-abiding, solid citizens. So if a law is passed, or the social winds change direction, people gradually and sub- or pre-consciously shift their own attitudes to conform. It's a way to create change painlessly.
The problem with that theory is that it works both ways. Look at Germany just prior to WWII.
In order to improve things in a positive manner, only benevolent leaders must be elected.
Then you have the situation as seen in our country in the last election. Just because legislation that helps the more unfortunate is adopted, not everyone will be pool n board. Eventually there is a backlash vote. Peoples opinions are relatively easy to manipulate if you appeal to their emotions.
Yes, it works both ways --which should tell us where we should focus our energies!
