Luxembourg is set to become the first country with free public transit

Guardian  Luxembourg is set to become the first country in the world to make all its public transport free.

Fares on trains, trams and buses will be lifted next summer under the plans of the re-elected coalition government led by Xavier Bettel, who was sworn in for a second term as prime minister on Wednesday.

Bettel, whose Democratic party will form a government with the leftwing Socialist Workers’ party and the Greens, had vowed to prioritise the environment during the recent election campaign.

Lux is basically just gardening space around Lux City, so it's not as though they're making long-distance train travel free.

I recall driving to Lux when I worked in Germany in the '60s. The route marker said "Lux 5km" or something like that but just seconds later I shot past the border-guard post and stood on my brakes, afraid I was going to be shot, which caused the guards to fall down laughing. I started to back up and they just waved me on, still laughing. Apparently they never put down their pole gate because it's too expensive to keep replacing the pole.
