Portside - Many Republicans who were put off by Donald Trump’s peccadillos, ignorance, and outlandish behavior have found their anointed one in
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis offers Trumpism without Trump,
promises to Make America Great Again without saying the words, and
wallows in the culture-war cruelties that propelled Trump into office in
2016. The betting markets now have DeSantis and former President Trump in a dead heat for the Republican presidential nominee in 2024.

People (bullies) like DeSantis signify that ‘government’, now, has less to do with Construct, and more with Attitude. What is to prevent the “Authoritarian Personality” from succeeding here in the U.S.A.! Some of our country’s leaders have lately favored Putin, and fought against those who are against Fascism. We fought a war against fascism, but ‘the previous guy’ called those who died fighting that war “losers”. And got away with it. That’s a ‘bad’ attitude.
What is to prevent authoritarian individuals in the U.S. from following in the footsteps of Joseph Stalin in Russia, Adolf Hitler in Germany, Francisco Franco in Spain, Benito Mussolini in Italy, Marshal Philippe Pétain in Vichy France, Idi Amin in Uganda, Manuel Noriega of Panama, Chairman Mao Zedong in the People’s Republic of China, Augusto Pinochet in Chile, and Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Elections?
As a recent example, the GOP’s resolution against ‘socialism’ and social programs is spurious and misleading. The same group of people who penned it seemed to support those authoritarian people like Putin in Russia, and Kim Jong-un in North Korea. There is No logic.
Many voters have signed-on to this new paradigm, having gotten a ‘taste’ of brash behavior and inflammatory language that appeals to emotions of fear and hate. Nice hair and a winning smile aren’t enough to win voters anymore, and we are looking at thoughtfulness and respectability in the rear-view-mirror.
It should not have gotten this far. We, the ‘huddled masses’, the hoi polloi, have responsibility to be more informed. And despite the numerous avenues to acquire information, most people seem guided by ‘entertainment’ News media; and their next door neighbors bellicose opinions regarding everything from what ‘camo’ outfit to wear, to refusing to be vaccinated.
Our government officials need to be responsible for something akin to ‘quality control’. Who is responsible for letting people on to a Political Party’s Primary Ticket? Isn’t there a vetting process? Aren’t the RNC and DNC private entities? Can’t they be sued for incompetence or something? There is no excuse for political inflammatory rhetoric and behavior that fuels fear and hate toward race, gender, nationality, or religion. And that is the Attitude that I refer to.
Authoritarianism.
An alternative must be found.
