The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines a major work stoppage as a strike or a lockout
that involves at least 1,000 workers and lasts one full shift at the
place where the strike started. Last year, more than 270,000 workers
were involved in 31 work stoppages.
In 1983, union members comprised about 20% of the employees in the US. By 2024, they were 10%.
