What would happen if everyone voted?

This is why we should fight to require compulsory ballot return (in mail balloting states like here in Oregon) or voting registration verification (in in-person voting states).

That is, you don't have to vote if you don't want to.

But, if you choose not to vote, you still must return the ballot unvoted or come to the polling place and verify or update your registration info.

You don't have to register to pay taxes, and taxes are compulsory. You shouldn't have to register to vote, and maintaining the voting rolls should be compulsory as well. If you decide you want to vote and help choose the officeholders who spend your taxes at the same time, great.
