The Hill - Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of a key House committee, announced Wednesday that he will not run for reelection.
"There is a time to come and a time to go. This is the right time, for me, to leave politics and return to the justice system," he said in a statement on Twitter.
Gowdy is the 10th GOP committee chairman to head for the exit this cycle.
NBC - Including Gowdy, at least 20 Republican incumbents have said they will retire this year.
Democrats need to win 24 seats to flip the House and the president's party has lost an average of 32 in every midterm election since before the Civil War.
Progressive Review - While the political factor may be significant, don't ignore the possibility that these Republicans don't want to find themselves embroiled in the major Trump scandals they may have reason to know is impending.
