Nice News - Study after study has shown the negative effects of smoking, and the positive effects of quitting the habit. Now, lawmakers in the United Kingdom are looking to create the first generation of people who don’t smoke at all. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, introduced Tuesday, proposes gradually increasing the legal age for purchasing tobacco so that anyone born after Jan. 1, 2009, would be prohibited from ever buying such products.
“This is a groundbreaking piece of public health legislation.
It will mean that we are creating the first-ever smoke-free generation
in our country. So children growing up in our country today will never,
never legally be able to buy cigarettes,” said Health Secretary Wes
Streeting, per Barron’s. The bill, which comes about two weeks after the U.K. announced a ban on disposable vapes, also includes restrictions on e-cigarette advertisements, flavors, displays, and packaging to make them less appealing to young people.
