$1.993 trillion - The U.S. budget deficit in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That’s 12% above the 2025 level in nominal dollars, reaching the highest level since 2021.
The Guardian - The defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has said the execution of Nidal Hasan by firing squad will be livestreamed next month, in a radical departure from the previous norm. Hegseth said: “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand there’s serious consequences for these types of things.” Hasan opened fire at a medical processing center at Fort Hood, Texas, on 5 November 2009, killing 13 people and wounding dozens more. A military jury sentenced him to death in 2013 and he has been held at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas ever since. The last known case of a military firing squad in the US was in November 1945.
Washington Post - The Defense Department's announcement that it would live-stream the scheduled execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan reverses decades of established practice surrounding the death penalty.
If carried out, it would be the first known time that U.S. authorities have broadcast live video of an execution to the public. It would also be the first public execution in the U.S. in decades, the first U.S. military execution since 1961, and the first military death by firing squad since World War II according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
