MSNBC - Some Republican senators have expressed concern about Trump’s decision to fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics hours after the release of a weak July jobs report.
The jobs report was far below expectations, leaving the market considerably worse than previously thought. Without evidence, Trump implied that BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer manipulated the data “for political purposes,” and ordered his administration to terminate her.
Some senators voiced displeasure with the abrupt reaction, saying the firing could erode trust in the nation’s job numbers. “We have to look somewhere for objective statistics. When the people providing the statistics are fired, it makes it much harder to make judgments,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said.
Several were concerned that McEntarfer was fired because Trump disliked the numbers. “If the president is firing the statistician because he doesn’t like the numbers but they are accurate, then that’s a problem,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wy., said. Read what else they had to say.
