Elon Musk

NBC News - Elon Musk bid adieu to the White House, abruptly ending his tenure as a special government employee without having achieved his goal of decimating the federal government. The tech billionaire sported a bruise near his right eye at his farewell event — an unmistakable metaphor for his tumultuous government service.

In recent weeks, Musk broke with Trump repeatedly on agenda items including the major “big beautiful” budget bill. Ultimately, however, Musk will be remembered in Washington for DOGE: His major government slashing project that shuttered government agencies, fired federal workers — some of whom had to be rehired — and canceled federal contracts.

Despite all the upheaval, Musk fell far short of his announced goal of saving $2 trillion. By his own agency's account, the figure stood at $175 billion Friday, with a nonpartisan group finding that the project’s actions have cost taxpayers $135 billion. The president contended that DOGE will continue cutting costs without Musk as its face. “This is not the end of DOGE, but really the beginning,” Musk said.
