Defending birthright citizenship

 Common Cause -   Today, Common Cause took legal action in Trump v. Casa Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court case that strikes at the heart of democracy. 

What’s at stake isn’t just the future of birthright citizenship — it’s a crucial test of whether our system of checks and balances can withstand presidential overreach.

Just hours after his inauguration, President Trump disregarded our rights and signed an unconstitutional executive order to end birthright citizenship — endangering millions of people born in this country and attempting to permanently reshape what it means to be American.

Combined with deporting thousands of families and community members, Trump wants to force American immigrants into hiding and deny us all the multi-racial democracy and safe neighborhoods we deserve.

Here's the facts: the 14th Amendment of the Constitution guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States, plain and simple.

It’s a right that nearly one million Americans fought and died for — and one of the most fundamental promises of equality and fairness in our Constitution. Common Cause will not allow this administration to dismantle our Constitutional rights.

This case could set a dangerous precedent. If successful, it would weaken our federal courts system — taking away their power to maintain checks and balances and prevent unconstitutional acts. And it would put the civil rights of every American — regardless of their immigration or citizenship status — at grave risk.

No president — including Trump — can override an official, ratified part of our Constitution, but if the last 100 days have taught us anything — this administration doesn’t care.

That’s why Common Cause is getting involved in this case to defend the power of federal courts to stop unconstitutional actions — not just for a few people, but for everyone. The administration is trying to strip courts of that authority, and we're stepping in to stop it.
