Axios - The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has transitioned to an all-EV school bus fleet, working with the company Zum to deploy the 74 buses. Zum claims OUSD is now the first major school district in the country to go all electric.
- The buses have vehicle-to-grid technology, allowing them to return energy to the grid via bidirectional chargers when they're not being used.
- When the buses plug into their chargers, software uses AI to help determine when to charge or offload power, in a demonstration of V2G tech.
- The company says its buses will send 2.1 gigawatt hours of energy to the grid each year. The project's utility partner, PG&E, provides 2.7 megawatts of load to the facility.
Axios reported earlier this year that Zum raised $140 million in a Series E from Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, as well as Sequoia and SoftBank, giving the company a valuation of over $1.3 billion.
