Presidential debate

“President Biden brushed off Democrats’ complaints about his performance at the debate with former President Donald Trump and indicated that he had no plans to rethink his candidacy,” the New York Times reports. Asked about Democrats’ concerns about his showing and calls for him to consider dropping out of the race, he said: “No. It’s hard to debate a liar.”

CNN -  Trump’s repeat falsehoods included his assertions that some Democratic-led states allow babies to be executed after birth, that every legal scholar and everybody in general wanted Roe v. Wade overturned, that there were no terror attacks during his presidency, that Iran didn’t fund terror groups during his presidency, that the US has provided more aid to Ukraine than Europe has, that Biden for years referred to Black people as “super predators,” that Biden is planning to quadruple people’s taxes, that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned down 10,000 National Guard troops for the US Capitol on January 6, 2021that Americans don’t pay the cost of his tariffs on China and other countries, that Europe accepts no American cars, that he is the president who got the Veterans Choice program through Congress, and that fraud marred the results of the 2020 election. Trump also added some new false claims, such as his assertions that the US currently has its biggest budget deficit and its biggest trade deficit with China. Both records actually occurred under Trump.

Biden made at least nine false or misleading claims in the debate. He used false numbers while describing two of his key Medicare policies, falsely claimed that no US troops had been killed on his watch, repeated his usual misleading figure about billionaires’ tax rates, baselessly claimed that Trump wants to eliminate Social Security, falsely said that the unemployment rate was 15% when he took office, inaccurately said that the Border Patrol union had endorsed him before clarifying that he was talking about agents’ support for the border bill he had backed, and exaggerated Trump’s 2020 comments about the possibility of treating Covid-19 by injecting disinfectant.

Here is a detailed fact check from CNN’s reporting team.

On CNN, Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s former communications director, said: “It was a really disappointing debate performance from Joe Biden. I don’t think there’s any other way to slice it.”

NBC News -  Party rules make it almost impossible to replace nominees without their consent, let alone smoothly replace them with someone else. And doing so would amount to party insiders overturning the results of primaries in which Democratic voters overwhelmingly nominated Biden. He won almost 99% of all delegates.

CNN -According to a CNN flash poll, 67% of debate watchers said Trump turned in a better performance, compared to 33% for Biden.

NBC News - Among the reactions from Democratic lawmakers post-debate:

→ "This was like a champion boxer who gets in the ring past his prime and needs his corner to throw in the towel," one said, adding that he meant Biden should exit the race.

→ It's "time to talk about an open convention and a new Democratic nominee," said another, who had been a solid Biden supporter.

The fear among these Democrats is that the version of Biden that showed up to the debate cannot win in November. Despite the wishes of some Dems that another nominee take on Trump, there is much to consider — and multiple reasons why the options for a switch are limited. Full story.

NY Times -  Times Opinion asked 12 of our columnists and contributors to watch the presidential debate on Thursday night, assess who won and who lost and distill what stood out to them. They rated the candidates on a scale of 0 to 5: 0 means the night didn’t change anything; 5 means one man triumphed.

The Results: 5 NY Times columnists and contributors gave Trump 5 points, 2 gave him 4. 2 thought it was a draw and none say Biden as the winner.

NPR - Here are three fact checks of claims made during the debate related to immigration:

Claim 1: The U.S. Southern border is open:This is a talking point used often by Republicans when referring to Biden’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. “He decided to open up our border, open up our country,” Trump said of Biden during the debate. But this is not accurate. It is true that under Biden, unauthorized crossings hit a record high, oftentimes overwhelming certain border communities and straining its resources. But the border is not "open." In fact, it is arguably more reinforced than ever. The federal government has added more sections of the U.S. Southern border walls, and there have been more military operations at the border. The administration has also increased the number of expedited removals.Biden has tried to work with Congress to overhaul the immigration system, but a majority of Republican lawmakers have not moved forward with the Senate $118 billion border agreement.

Claim 2: Biden’s executive order has reduced illegal migration:Unable to act more broadly without Congress, Biden has implemented a handful of policies aimed at reducing the number of crossings, and asylum claims, at the Southern border over the last few months. One June 4, Biden issued executive actions severely restricted asylum claims between ports of entry, blocking most unauthorized migrants from attaining asylum. The Biden administration has said that since the policy went into effect, there has been a 40% decrease in unauthorized crossings. But these types of dips are not surprising. Historically, these policies deter migrants for a short period of time, but those numbers tend to go up, according to an analysis by the D.C.-based Washington Office on Latin America.Migrants tend to go into a wait-and-see period before crossing again. Many migrants who have talked to NPR in Mexican border communitieshave said they will attempt to cross, despite the policies.Of note: Biden’s asylum restrictions mirror those implemented by Trump, but that Biden lifted in 2021.

Claim 3: Migrants crossing are committing crimes:There is no doubt that some migrants who have crossed the border without authorization have committed crimes. This has been something Republicans have been hammering on recently, after two Venezuelan immigrants were charged with capital murder for killing a 12-year-old girl. But data shows a vast majority of immigrants do not commit crimes. In fact, a study by Northwestern University examining a 150-year period found that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the U.S. born.

Reaction of the Guardian panelists

Rod D. Martin - Thing we know: 1. The insiders knew Biden was like this. 2. They didn’t have to agree to any debate at all. They certainly didn’t have to propose and show up for the earliest debate in history. 3. So they humiliated Biden deliberately, but only after the primary voters get no say, yet early enough pre-convention for the insiders to pick his successor before the fall campaign. This has been the plan for a long, long time.
