Middle East

The Ink“How much more proof does Biden need that Netanyahu is not a U.S. ally?" Israeli journalist Alon Pinkas asked that question this week in response to the Israeli prime minister’s accusations — denied by the White House — that Biden had slowed arms transfers and that the president and Secretary of State Antony Blinken had been at odds over the issue.

With the latest U.S. proposal for a ceasefire stalled, tensions mounting on Israel’s northern border, and Democrats split over Netanyahu’s plan to address Congress in July, prominent voices stateside have been asking similar questions.

Nicholas Kristof (inspired in part by Pinkas’ piece), wrote this weekend in The New York Times that the current state of U.S, policy not only prolongs the war in Gaza but jeopardizes U.S. foreign policy goals worldwide:

Biden’s Gaza policy has helped Netanyahu stay in power without, in my view, advancing Israel’s long-term security interests. The war has made a mockery of Biden’s arguments that the United States backs the “rules-based international order” and has thus undermined our position in Ukraine.”
