A quick thought.
Granted, there are medical problems that are problematic during pregnancy. Disease states, embryonic developmental problems, and ‘simple’ physical difficulties involving size of the mother.
We now live in a very sophisticated society, with wonderful medical services available to many / most people. And lives of both a mother and/or her baby can be saved through that medical intervention.
I guess there are many people who have watched a Mad Max movie, or other Post-apocalypse movies. Or are possibly steeped in christian theory regarding the book of revelation. Of which, many modern republicans might have exposed to. Either of which might spur the pessimistic, myopic, or easily brainwashed to radical actions like buying guns to protect themselves from the ‘other’. Any other.
But, a little information can be a dangerous thing. There are those in a position of authority that seem to consider themselves ‘superior’ and enlightened who see the coming of the end of the world (or at least that of modern society) as something that needs to be prepared for, but from a larger, societal and medical viewpoint. Actually, I’m not sure if this Missouri palaver is simply a chest-thumping Republican hat-tip to “Only The Strong Survive” simplistic thinking like ‘man, we’re too tough to need all that pansy medical intervention’. Or, (perish-the-thought) a back-handed affirmation of Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution - specifically the Natural Selection part where the most able and adaptable live-on and propagate the species, and definitely putting the kibosh on any possible intrusion of Artificial Selection through modern medicine.
