Workers update

Axios - The share of American workers who are members of a union hit a new low in 2023 — it's now 1 in 10.  2023 felt like a strong year for unions.

  • The UAW scored record contracts from General Motors, Ford and Stellantis after an unprecedented strike.
  • The Teamsters won concessions from UPS without a strike.
  • Actors and writers unions got new deals from Hollywood after bruising work stoppages.
  • And public opinion of unions is higher than it's been since 1965, according to Gallup.

Yes, but: Unions represent a smaller share of the workforce than ever before.

  • 14.4 million workers were union members in 2023, up from 14.3 million in 2022 — but the percentage fell because the workforce grew at a faster rate than union membership. More

CNN -  More than 13,000 tech employees have been laid off so far this year, data shows, as the industry doubles down on investments in artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, eBay's CEO Jamie Iannone announced the company is cutting 1,000 positions, or about 9% of its full-time employees, citing the "challenging macroeconomic environment." Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned employees to expect additional layoffs in the months to come as the tech giant reorients itself toward AI "and beyond." Duolingo laid off around 10% of its contract workers as it moves toward a more heavy reliance on artificial intelligence tools. Amazon has also cut hundreds of jobs this year, including at the game streaming platform Twitch.
