Sam Smith – There have been a number of assessments of the Trump led disasters we face that compare our status as second only to the Civil War. While it is true that Trump has yet to propose a revival of slavery, it is worth remembering that the Confederates seceded from the Union while the Trumpists desire to destroy it. Trump is not the first to move in this direction – since Reagan America has been undoing its own basic principles – but his success suggests that we are further along than we have been willing to admit. As I noted back in 2017, we all live in a Mafia neighborhood now.
The upcoming election is not really between Democrats and Republicans but between democracy and dictatorship. And events like the January 6 attack on the Capitol, are not political – they are treasonous.
Thanks to the media, we have come to accept such massive shifts as just more news. The media lacks the ability to put what it covers into meaningful historical context, thus we don’t have any real help in understanding what is happening to us.
Just remember as 2024 approaches: we will not be just choosing a president, we will be acting to preserve or destroy a constitutional system we’ve enjoyed for over 230 years.

I think the media still has the ability to explain the context of what is happening, but it cannot make a profit speaking truth to power when the political players can create their own stages and blast out the lies even louder
Raises the question: why do so many Trump supporters want to destroy the country as we know it? What kind of country do they want to live in.?
The media, to its discredit, often "explodes"the the attention getting news while relegating the implications to page 2 or 20 if it is print media, or after the commercials if on TV. Dessert first may lessen your appetite for what you really need. There is no shortage of news. Context is what is missing.
