Sam Smith - Politics is a lot more negative than it used to be, which increases the threat that the Biden/McCarthy deficit solution will face worse reactions than it should. The key question used to be: is this making things better or worse than it would be if we did nothing or rejected it?
Today the question too often is: what’s wrong with this that I can get some publicity about? The beauty of being negative is that you don’t have to come up with solutions, only criticism.
The Biden/McCarthy plan is obviously not the ideal solution but we can save the argument about that until after we pass it and head for the 2024 campaign. Incremental progress is always better than a disaster.
