Sam Smith - As part of my effort to keep up with America's cultural changes, I watched three quarters of last night's four and half hour Grammys show on TV. On the whole, I'd say that popular music is becoming less melodic and its chords less interesting but then I started my first band in the 1950s. When a youngish clerk these days asks me for my name I sometimes tell them, "Sam Smith, the original one. I was playing in bands 40 years before that dude came along." The other day, one nurse actually sent me a summery of my recent visit beginning with, "Dear Sam Smith (the original Sam Smith)" And last night I got to see the other one.
