British Supermarket Eliminates 'Use By' Dates on Milk, Tells Shoppers to Use Sniff Test

Treehugger -  People in Britain will have to start relying on their noses rather their eyeballs when detecting whether or not a container of milk is still good to drink. A major supermarket chain, Morrisons, has announced that it will be eliminating "use by" dates on 90% of milk sold in stores by the end of January. The decision is part of an effort to reduce the enormous quantities of milk that are discarded due to consumer misunderstanding over printed expiry dates. This waste results in unnecessary carbon entering the atmosphere and the squandering of valuable resources required to raise dairy cattle.

OK, but boy are those stores going to be shocked, bothered, and bewildered when shoppers open milk containers in the store, just to do a 'sniff' test! And after that maybe only slightly more surprised if people dip a finger into a previously unopened milk container to give it a more 'proper' taste-test... or maybe just take a nice big Swig! Can't be too careful now can we.

If the responsibility for product freshness and Safety is put on the consumer, they should be able to use whatever measure they deem necessary! If neither producers, suppliers, nor stores fail to provide necessary data for the Consumer on a label, just what else can be expected?

And who, in their 'right mind' is gonna buy an already opened container of milk?
