Arizona Democratic Senator leaving party to become independent

Axios  Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona said in remarks published at 6 a.m. ET today that she's leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent. It's a political earthquake that will shake up the Senate — just three days after Democrats thought they had secured a 51-49 majority.

Washington PostThe first thing to note is that it remains unclear whether Sinema will continue to caucus with Democrats, as two other independents in the Senate do. When asked about this, Sinema spokesman Pablo Sierra-Carmona said merely that “she intends to maintain her committee assignments from the Democratic majority. She has never and will not attend caucus messaging or organizational meetings.”
