I would like to refute the image of people that are white, male, and over 65, as being ‘ignorant’, short-sighted, soul-less Republicans.
I may not be the ‘brightest bulb in the box’, but I payed attention to the old-guy in the shop I worked at when I was in high school and college that said “ Don’t be like me – Too soon old, and too late Smart”. And, fundamentalist religious zealots might lump me with ‘soul-less’ individuals. But I am NOT a Republican.
Writing as someone who disliked the Draft in the 1960s, but also as someone who is concerned about a segment of our modern military ‘culture’ that seems to include religious zealotry, and nationalism; or just as likely racial hatred / superiority. I fall on the side of the fence that would include a modern Draft.
These current military culture attributes, combined with corporate / political alliances, ie modern “Fascism”, leads one to foresee a dim future for our country.
Well, maybe not all that ‘dim’ if you are White, Christian, Republican, and lack imagination and compassion. Heck (note: not H*ll), the Catholic Church wouldn’t even send a representative to Pres. Biden’s inauguration because he (Biden) supports Roe v Wade.
Of course we first need to get ‘money’ out of politics. We need to address things like reversing Citizens United v FEC. We need to implement regulations re. issues first confronted by Glass–Steagall Act. We need to Legislate higher taxes on incomes to reduce income disparity, which would also help financially support infrastructure repair, and development in local, State, and Federal agencies.
The goal, it seems, might be to make corporations less influential than our national government and thus subject to its laws, vs. law devised through corporate ‘think tanks’. Make local Law Enforcement, National Guard, and the Military more transparent to our citizenry, and not easily influenced by outside forces which might allow thugs to invade our Washington Capital Building. And, just as important, get rid of private mercenaries.
