The study is laudable and the importance of reforestation in carbon sequestering can't be ignored. Planting trees is a great start, but the trees need to be planted in places that are suitable for forests, and planted as forests and not tree plantations.
That said, the restoration of grasslands seems to be missed in the article and probably in the study. Grasslands that are managed to mimic the action of large herds of grazing animals migrating through their range will sequester carbon more quickly then tree planting, by allowing grasses to grow deep root systems and build topsoil.
In the interest of lowering carbon emissions, agriculture as is commonly practiced needs to change radically, because the ploughing destroys top soil and releases massive amounts of sequestered carbon with every seasons that ploughing happens.
For more info,
If you use twitter follow @BuildSoil, he tweets about how to sequester carbon, how to improve soil and is starting a plant a million chestnut trees project to supply people with both carbon sequestering trees and a food crops to feed people.
On youtube look for videos of Gabe Brown, a farmer and rancher who uses carbon sequestering techniques at his farm.
Or for a read about how farms can sequester carbon from a farm that does it.
