Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in_U.S._by_year

From 1927 through 1981, fatalities per 100,000 population were over 20 each year. Since 2009, that number has been down around 10.

Might be just my opinion but things like seatbelts may have had a big impact on that number. And, while alcohol is still a big problem in causing automobile accidents, it may have been a much larger problem in the late 40s, 50s, and 60s.

It will be interesting if things like legalized recreational pot will have any influence on the above mentioned statistic.

Lets hope not.
