Jewish doctor led care for Bowers

USA Today =Jeff Cohen, president of Allegheny General Hospital who also attends synagogue, led the medical team who tended to Robert Bowers after he was shot multiple times by police taking him into custody on Saturday. Minutes earlier, police say Bowers burst into Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue and opened fire on worshipers armed with an assault rifle and three handguns.

Bowers told officers "I just want to kill Jews," according to a complaint. Cohen told ABC affiliate WTAE that Bowers was still shouting that phrase when he arrived in his emergency room.

"My job isn't to judge him ... my job is to care for him," Cohen told United Kingdom's Channel 4 News.

Cohen said many of the medics who assisted in Bowers' recovery are Jewish, and he called them "heroes." Cohen also said he personally took time to meet Bowers, because he was curious.

"Quite honestly, he's just a guy ... He's some mother's son," Cohen said. "And how did he get from that to where he is today? That's going to be a large debate that we have to wrestle with as a society."
