How David Letterman took on Trump

Its a crude but so far effective ruse that the two-party duopoly has foisted upon the American people this time around.

One candidate is so bad and keeps making such outrageous statements which the other candidates and members of his own party deplore, that what's left of the daily news cycle breath is sucked out!

Instead of playing into this farce, which is win-win-win for its corporate backers we should be discussing what seems to me to be the most reasonable proposals on the table, which stem from Jill Stein and the Green Party.

For example, this weekend is the Green Party convention. Will there be coverage? How about everyone donating $5 to Jill Stein's campaign this Friday noon through Saturday noon? That wouldn't be a big burden and would raise awareness of an excellent alternative.

Its more difficult and less popular to make everyone focus on the real issues we face rather than the circus of recriminations and turmoil; that is seemingly more interesting. At least we are being tacitly told that its more important / interesting by the very presentation of it in such profusion.

But our real problems, properly presented, can turn out to be opportunities. Green energy and infrastructure jobs are mostly for local economies. We can solve these problems if we focus on them.

As a reminder, I'm listing the lyrics to New Speedway Boogie, below. One of its lines, "in the heat of the sun a man died of cold" suggests that we have the means and only need the will and proper focus to solve our problems. Face the sun, light, inspiration, rather than turning away to look at the mud and political drama, the shadow.

Its also an echo of a line from Oh Susanna: "The sun so hot I froze to death, Susanna, don't you cry."

My favorite line in the song is:

Now I don't know but I been told
it's hard to run with the weight of gold
Other hand I heard it said
it's just as hard with the weight of lead

Let's not freeze when we could be sunning!

Cheers, Tom

New Speedway Boogie
Words by Robert Hunter, music by Jerry Garcia

Please don't dominate the rap Jack
if you got nothing new to say
If you please don't back up the track
This train got to run today

Spent a little time on the mountain
Spent a little time on the hill
Heard some say better run away
Others say you better stand still

Now I don't know but I been told
it's hard to run with the weight of gold
Other hand I heard it said
it's just as hard with the weight of lead

Who can deny? Who can deny?
it's not just a change in style
One step done and another begun
in I wonder how many miles?

Spent a little time on the mountain
Spent a little time on the hill
Things went down we don't understand
but I think in time we will

Now I don't know but I been told
in the heat of the sun a man died of cold
Do we keep on coming or stand and wait
with the sun so dark and the hour so late?

You can't overlook the lack Jack
of any other highway to ride
It's got no signs or dividing lines
and very few rules to guide

Spent a little time on the mountain
Spent a little time on the hill
I saw things getting out of hand
I guess they always will

I don't know but I been told
if the horse don't pull you got to carry the load
I don't know whose back's that strong
Maybe find out before too long

One way or another
One way or another
One way or another
this darkness got to give
One way or another
One way or another
One way or another
this darkness got to give
