John Oliver joins the cause of DC statehood

Sam Smith - Forty five years ago this summer I wrote an article on how and why Washington DC should become a state without a constitutional amendment. The article led to the creation of the DC Statehood Party which held a seat on DC's city council and/or school board for 25 years, but - thanks to Congress - statehood is still a dream. (Obama could have easily got it passed in his first term but didn't lift a finger to help the majority black capital).

So it was with no little joy that I saw this clip from John Oliver's show. (It's 17 minutes long but start at minute 15 for the great finale)
