Huffington Post - All traffic along a major freeway connecting California and Arizona
was blocked indefinitely when a bridge over a desert wash collapsed
during heavy rain, and the roadway in the opposite direction suffered
severe damage, authorities said.
The collapse on Interstate 10 in southeastern California Sunday
afternoon left one driver injured, stranded numerous motorists and
complicated travel for countless thousands for what officials warned
could be a long time.

In the interests of accuracy, attributing this bridge failure to austerity may be erroneous---at least at this stage. The bridge receive an 'A' inspection rating earlier this year. From the photographs, it is plainly evident that the traditional banks of the wash were overwhelmed by a massive flow of water that undercut the existing foundations of the bridge. If anything is to blame, perhaps climate change deserves some consideration. Weather patterns have changed. Though nothing much can be said about the Atlantic hurricane season with regards to the US, activity in the Eastern Pacific has been active, with storm tracking up the Baja coast and eventually striking the southwestern region of the US.
Welcome the new normal.
