A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. - Aristotle

With apologies to Aristotle...

So how does this work in an age of increasing atheism? Will there become some new "standard" of piety? What happens when there becomes no "God" to have on the tyrant's side?

Will science become the new litmus test of piety, even though science is rife with bias, pandering for money, conflicts of interest and corruption?
