Strategies for dealing with dysfunctional politics

Progressive Review - Over the past few years we have suggested a number of approaches citizens can take dealing with the dysfunctional politicians who run and ruin our government these days. These have included:
  • The one night stand: You vote for someone like Obama in order to prevent far worse Republicans from taking over. Then on the next day you become his opposition again
  •  The Mafia metaphor: You think of the Democrats and Republicans as two mobsfighting for control of your country and you go with the one least likely to kill your brother.
  • The emergency room approach: You consider the election booth as an emergency room. You can't cure or adequately repair your country there, but you can act in a manner that help keeps the patient alive, does no additional harm nor makes long term recovery more difficult.
  •  The battlefield analogy: You're not choosing a candidate but a battlefield on which to fight future conflicts.
Now, here's one more:
  • Campaign on the issues, not the candidates - As long as we're stuck with Hillary Clinton, we can't change her directly. but politicians these days are increasingly reactive. Give them something that they have to react to and you will help to change the politics, if not the politician. Hillary Clinton seems especially vulnerable to this sort of pressure. And the beauty of it is that you can fight the right on the issues and never even have to mention Hillary Clinton's name.

Yes, and let's look at each of these tactics from the (pardon the nauseous pun) counterparty's position: 'I can shit on the other side for years, then help them justify holding their nose against the stink.' Domestic violence has the same rationale.

This handful of excuses only applies when you have somewhat equal standing. These days they are political suicide.
