Sam Smith, 1989 - My relations with Marion Barry were inconsistent over the years. From having been a close aide when he was head of SNCC in DC, to being a regular critic, and then realizing - after watching his successors - that he was not as bad as I had sometimes thought. This piece was written at a low point in my assessment - at the end of the Reagan administration, and in the midst of watching a down turn in the black power and civil rights movement. While it primarily describes what was known then as "Chocolate City," it perhaps helps to explain some things that were happening nationally.
