Business Green - As the Liberal Democrats prepare to gather in Glasgow for their annual conference, the electoral challenge the party faces next year was again underlined as the Green Party revealed it has taken its membership past the 20,000 mark for the first time.
The announcement, which comes hot on the heels of a recent poll showing the Greens and Lib Dems neck and neck in fourth place on six per cent of the vote, confirms the Green Party membership has grown 45 per cent this year - a performance that is in stark contrast to the contracting memberships of the two coalition parties.
The Party also revealed that membership of its Young Greens branch has doubled since March this year to nearly 4,000 members.
The Greens leadership hailed the milestone as further evidence of the political momentum the party has enjoyed since its record performance in the European Elections in May, when it forced the Lib Dems into fifth place.
The Party is now preparing to contest at least 75 per cent of the seats at next year's General Election - an increase of 50 per cent on 2010 - and is targeting a number of seats in Bristol and Norwich alongside its one current seat in Brighton.
With the polls suggesting that the election will be extremely close concerns are mounting in Labour and Lib Dem circles that a continued strong showing for the Greens could impact the result in a host of marginal seats.
