Great thoughts of Republicans

AL.Com - A former aide to President Ronald Reagan wants a handful of Southern states to secede from the union and form a new country named for the late GOP hero.

It may come to a shock to some Alabamians, however, that Douglas MacKinnon's vision of the country known as "Reagan" would initially only include South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Those three states were chosen, MacKinnon told talk show host Janet Mefferd, due to their population size and natural resources, such as access to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

MacKinnon, who wrote speeches for Reagan and George H.W. Bush, outlined what he described as a "purely academic" plan in his book "The Secessionist States of America: The Blueprint for Creating a Traditional Values Country ... Now."

The new country would be devoted to traditional values, including marriage. The three states would start the movement with others joining in later, he added.

"The world has been turned upside down if you do happen to believe in traditional values," MacKinnon said during the interview. "I think there's a core group in the United States of America that's anywhere from 30 to 50 to 80 million Americans that strongly believe in traditional values. Unfortunately, as we know too, much of the mainstream media has been hijacked by the left and so it's very difficult to get our message out."

MacKinnon's plan doesn't include Texas.

"There have been a number of incursions into Texas and other places from some of the folks in Mexico," he said
