NBC News - Lisa Parker was headed for jury duty in lower Manhattan when the first hijacked plane hit the World Trade Center’s north tower on Sept. 11, 2001. An NBC News producer for “Dateline” at the time, she rushed to the scene and spent hours every day for the next several weeks at ground zero, documenting the recovery efforts.

More than two decades later in 2023, a guest at a dinner party asked her a blunt question: “Did you get cancer yet?” Just four months later, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an aggressive blood cancer, joining a growing number of people diagnosed with cancer decades after they’d spent time at or near ground zero.

According to the federal World Trade Center Health Program, 57,044 people have been diagnosed with cancer linked to 9/11, and the rates appear to be escalating.  Read the full story here.
