Chris Bowers Republicans lost, in a landslide, every significant election in November 2025, including California, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Earlier in 2025, Republicans also lost in a landslide in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election.

Across all 83 special elections for congressional and state legislative races from 2025-2026, there has been an average swing of 12.6% toward the Democratic candidate compared to November 2024. While it is true that Democrats also did pretty well in special elections from 2023-2024, they are actually performing about five points better in 2025-2026 than they were in 2023-2024. 

New YorkerCalifornia’s governor has been touted as the Democrats’ best shot in 2028. But first he’ll need to convince voters that he’s not just a slick establishment politician.
