Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington, and Joseph Tobin of Newark said without a moral vision, current foreign policy debates have become "mired in polarization, partisanship, and narrow economic and social interests."
The statement represents an unusual public intervention by Catholic leadership and marks the second time in two months that the U.S. Catholic hierarchy has challenged President Donald Trump's administration policies. In November, the entire U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops condemned the administration's mass deportation efforts and "vilification" of migrants.
