Getting needed food out

Axios - Grocers, restaurants, delivery apps and nonprofits are racing to help food banks, Axios' Kelly Tyko reports.

  • Gigglewaters, a restaurant in Tampa, Fla., is offering kids free bagged lunches. "Parents can stop in with their children with no purchase necessary and no questions asked," a spokesperson for the restaurant told Axios Tampa Bay.
  • Heretic Coffee Co., in Portland, Ore., is giving free breakfast to anyone who needs it. "No proof needed. No questions asked."
  • Instacart is offering 50% off grocery orders (up to $50) for active SNAP users.

What you can do: Many food banks prefer cash donations. They know what's needed most and can buy wholesale at cheaper prices. If you're planning on donating food, these products are among the most helpful.

  • Canned protein such as beans, meat or fish
  • Chunky, low-sodium soup
  • Dry rice
  • Canned vegetables
  • Peanut butter
  • Boxed mac and cheese
  • Spices

More.
