Sam Smith - One of the things that troubles me most is the failure to report our national status in appropriately grim terms. The fact of the matter is that this country has never been in such a hazardous state with the exception of the first Civil War.
We have a president who has no respect for the Constitution, for telling the truth and for dealing fairly with others. He is surrounded by politicians who either lend support to his misbehavior or are afraid to openly challenge it. And we have a media whose secret sin is the normalization of Trump era madness.
My father was in the New Deal and I first covered Washington in the late 1950s, or about a third of US history, and nothing this bad has happened in our lifetimes. And little good will happen until we honestly admit the disaster we're in. As Edward R Murrow put it a long time ago, "“No one man can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices.”
