Federal Appeals Court Rules Majority of President Trump’s Tariffs Illegal

Shortlysts A federal appeals court ruled that nearly all of the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration are illegal, but it left the tariffs in place until October 14th to give the Trump Administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court. The court found that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 does not grant the President sweeping authority to impose tariffs.

The ruling does not affect tariffs that were imposed under different pieces of federal legislation. In response to the ruling, the Trump Administration asked the Supreme Court to quickly overturn the decision.
