Ranked choice voting

Fair Vote - This month, Maine’s state legislature passed LD 1666, a bill to expand use of ranked choice voting to general elections for governor and the state legislature. The measure now goes to Gov. Janet Mills to sign into law. Currently, Maine uses RCV in all federal elections but only in primaries for state offices. Once signed, LD 1666 may face additional legal challenges due to an earlier opinion from the Maine Supreme Court. Regardless, this is a major step forward for more voter choice and majority winners in the Pine Tree State....

Since 2021, New York City has used ranked choice voting in its primary elections. With early voting underway, elected leaders and organizations are leaning into the reform by endorsing multiple candidates. For instance, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed five candidates for mayor. We’re even seeing candidates cross-endorse each other. Mayoral candidates Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander have urged their supporters to rank themselves first and the other second; Mamdani and Michael Blake have also cross-endorsed. And during a debate, mayoral candidate Whitney Tilson said he’d rank Andrew Cuomo second.  Unfortunately, NYC does not use RCV for the general election.
