Supreme Court to decide whether religious schools can get public funds

NBC News - Public schools have become the center of a fight over religious freedom in Oklahoma after the state recently approved the first-ever religious virtual public charter school

The contested move has prompted arguments over the constitutionality of taxpayer dollars funding a religious educational institution, on which the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next month.

At the heart of the case are disagreements about the establishment clause, which forbids the government from endorsing one religion over another or setting up its church, and the free exercise clause, which says everyone has a right to express their own religious beliefs.

Generations of children learned of the "wall of separation between church and state," but the Supreme Court’s conservative majority has been receptive to arguments challenging the principle.
