Pope Francis

Newsweek -  Pope Francis increased his physical therapy on Wednesday as his condition remained stable, marking the beginning of Lent by receiving ashes on his forehead and calling the parish priest in Gaza, the Vatican announced.  The pontiff experienced no respiratory crises throughout the day and continued receiving oxygen through a nasal tube, as he has in recent days. Doctors plan to have him resume using a non-invasive mechanical mask overnight.

Medical staff treating the pope for double pneumonia emphasized that his prognosis remains guarded due to the complexity of his condition. The 88-year-old, who has chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, suffered two respiratory crises on Monday, setting back his recovery.

Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis participated in an Ash Wednesday celebration in the morning, receiving ashes and Holy Communion. Later, he resumed his official duties, including a call to Rev. Gabriel Romanelli, the Argentine priest serving as the parish priest of the Holy Family Church in Gaza. It was their third conversation since the pope was hospitalized on Feb. 14.
