Driverless ‘bus of the future’ is tested in Barcelona

AP News - In Barcelona, a new electric minibus is taking passengers for a ride at no cost. But here’s the catch: No one’s behind the wheel. The driverless vehicle, from French carmaker Renault and autonomous vehicle company WeRide, can go up to 25 mph and runs on a 1.3-mile circular route with four stops where curious passengers can hop on.

The Barcelona route is one of several testing projects in European cities to see how the minibus prototype performs on the open road. So far, there have been no reports of accidents, Barcelona officials said. While similar programs have long been underway in the U.S. and China, the vehicle represents a major milestone for Europe. “We want to show that this works and prepare Europe to this route in public transportation,” said Patrick Vergelas, head of Renault’s autonomous mobility projects.
