Daily Beast - The Trump
administration fired nearly half the members of a vaunted public health
program that works on the front lines of disease outbreaks, only a day
after anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Members of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) were told on Friday that they were among nearly 1,300 layoffs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to reports in Stat News and CBS News.
Trump's
administration has denied Georgia's request for an extension on the
timeframe for local governments to claim federal disaster relief to
assist with cleanup operations relating to Hurricane Helene. In a letter to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, The Federal Emergency
Management Agency states, "It has been determined that the increased
level of funding you have requested...is not warranted."
Mother Jones -On the last day of January, the Department of Defense—now run by ex-Fox News host and alleged domestic abuser Pete Hegseth—declared so-called “identity months,” like Black History Month, “dead” at the DoD. On the very same day, President Trump signed a proclamation affirming that February was Black History Month....
The DoD guidance says both that “the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds” should be celebrated and that the department “will focus on the character of [military members] service instead of their immutable characteristics.”...
In early February, the Maryland National Guard announced that it would not participate in an event to honor the life and legacy of famed slavery abolitionist Frederick Douglass, citing the DoD memo. (The White House proclamation mentions Douglass as an example of a pioneering Black America.)
“Since this event is organized as part of a Black History month celebration, the Maryland National Guard cannot support,” says the letter from Maryland National Guard Lt. Col. Meaghan Lazak, which adds that they cannot provide a band, troops, a flyover, or military vehicles for the event.
House Republicans are drafting articles of impeachment against judges who blocked key policies of Trump and Elon. Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) targets Judge Paul Engelmayer for halting DOGE’s Treasury access, while Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) aims at Judge John McConnell Jr. for pausing federal funding freezes.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today introduced the Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act to officially designate June 14 as a federal holiday to commemorate President Donald J. Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day. Born on June 14, 1946, President Donald J. Trump’s birthday coincided with Flag Day, which is observed annually and recognizes the anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official US flag in 1777. This legislation would permanently codify a new federal holiday called “Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day” on June 14 to honor this historic day.
