Daily Kos - The pro-immigration American Immigration Council (AIC) estimated that deporting all immigrants in the U.S. illegally over more than a decade would cost $88 billion annually. I do not know why they chose 10 years when Trump has said he would do it in four. But simple arithmetic says that Trump’s four-year cost would therefore be $220 billion per annum — working on the assumption he’ll achieve what he promises. (Stop laughing.)
NBC News - Seeking to investigate leaks of classified information,
the Trump Justice Department in 2017 and 2018 secretly obtained phone
and text message logs of 43 congressional staffers and two members of
Congress in a far broader probe than previously known, according to a
new report by the department’s internal watchdog.
Huffington Post - Critics worried about potential intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard’s
praise for foreign adversaries likely have an insurmountable problem: a
soon-to-be commander in chief who shares the same and even more extreme
views. The former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, now a Republican whom President-elect Donald Trump
has picked as his director of national intelligence, is under fire from
both parties for her years of sympathetic comments about Russian
dictator Vladimir Putin and his allies, including recently deposed
Syrian dictator Bashar Assad...
Trump’s own former national security adviser, John Bolton, said Gabbard’s appointment would please America’s foes. “Her judgment is nonexistent, and the idea that somehow she would be put in charge of this critical function should be giving our adversaries in Moscow and Beijing a lot of relief,” he told CNN.
Common Dreams - Progressives in Congress and other migrant rights advocates sharply criticized U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for his comments on immigration during a Sunday interview, including on his hopes to end birthright citizenship.
During a 76-minute interview with NBC News' Kristen Welker, Trump said he "absolutely" intends to end birthright citizenship, potentially through executive order, despite the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Among many lies the Republican told, he also falsely claimed that the United States is the only country to offer citizenship by birth; in fact, there are dozens.
In response,
outgoing Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said
on social media Monday: "This is completely un-American. The 14th
Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship. Trump cannot unilaterally
end it, and any attempt to do so would be both unconstitutional and
immoral."
Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) similarly
stressed
that "birthright citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution as a
cornerstone of American ideals. It reflects our belief that America is
the land of opportunity. Sadly, this is just another in the long line of
Trump's assault on the U.S. Constitution."
Voters think pardons for Jan 6 protesters is a "terrible, terrible, terrible" idea. Most (64%) are opposed. Just 1% want Trump prioritizing these pardons.
Few (33%) think the Jan 6 protesters were demonstrating patriotism. A majority think it was an insurrection (53%)
Call to Action - In an unprecedented move, more than 75 Nobel Prize winners have signed a letter urging senators not to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as head of the Department of Health and Human Services.
It's the first time in history that Nobel laureates have come together to oppose a Cabinet choice.
