Vanessa Mobley, NY Times - This summer, Ramy Youssef, Chris Rock and Tig Notaro were among the comedians invited by Pope Francis to the Vatican. How did this unconventional papal audience work? Did His Holiness make them laugh or vice versa?
Whatever the answer, it’s clear Pope Francis is distinctive in this and several other ways — he is the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit order) and the first from the Americas. His decisions to bless same-sex couples and address climate change have been warmly greeted by those who see a need for the Roman Catholic Church to address the world today.
Reflecting on the role jokes, kidding around and playfulness have in our lives, Francis explains in a guest essay adapted from his book: “They remind us that those who give up their own humanity give up everything, and that when it becomes hard to cry seriously or to laugh passionately, then we really are on the downhill slope.”
