NBC News - The Boeing capsule that was meant to send two astronauts into space for an eight-day journey returned safely to Earth overnight without them, marking the end of a three-month test flight beset by difficulties. The Starliner touched down in New Mexico’s White Sands Space Harbor at 12:01 a.m. ET. Its smooth journey back from the International Space Station suggests that the two NASA astronauts it carried to space — Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams — probably could have flown home safely. But problems with the Starliner’s thrusters and leaking helium, both detected soon after it launched, led the agency’s top officials to decide to call on SpaceX for a return flight early next year.
