Media

NewsGuard reported yesterday in Reality Check that the number of pink slime websites — those that present themselves as neutral news outlets but are secretly backed by partisan groups or hostile foreign governments — has surpassed the number of authentic daily local newspapers in the United States.  NewsGuard has now identified 1,265 pink slime outlets across the country, surpassing  the 1,213 daily newspapers that are still operating. (“Pink slime,” the unappetizing yet fitting nickname for these outlets, is derived from the pink-colored liquefied filler used as an additive in meat.) These sites — funded by both left-wing and right-wing partisans without disclosing their political orientation and also now by Russian disinformation operatives — masquerade as reliable local news sites, even taking names designed to make readers think they must be long-established trusted sources.
