Crime

St. Louis is one of the most violent cities in the U.S. Nearly 2,000 people have been killed there in the past decade. More than half of those cases remain unsolved. Each unsolved murder brings waves of grief — a pain disproportionately felt by the Black residents, who make up 44% of the city's population but 90% of those killed between 2014 and 2023...In 2019, city leaders asked the federal government to help police fight violent crime. But the department struggled to make use of federal assistance. As the number of killings increased, the homicide unit struggled with tight budgets, unrelenting overtime, turnover in key positions, an exodus of crime lab technicians and a ballooning backlog of DNA samples. Many family members still searching for answers say they feel forgotten by the police. "After a certain time, you have to accept that you may not get justice," Ronda Williams says. "You just have to wait on God to give them their karma."
