Health update

About 1 in 7 women experience postpartum, or perinatal, depression. And only about 6% of those who are diagnosed with the condition receive adequate treatment. “Many women will withdraw from the things they used to enjoy; they’ll also report just feeling drained of energy,” Dr. Kristina Deligiannidis told CBS Sunday Morning, explaining that it goes far beyond the typical “baby blues.” Thankfully, however, a new treatment — the first pill developed specifically for postpartum depression — is set to become available this week, the outlet reports. Zuranolone, being sold under the brand name Zurzuvae, is a once-daily, 14-day therapy that has been shown to “provide rapid improvement” in symptoms, per a press release. The speed with which the drug works is key, as traditional antidepressants often take time to have an effect, and many new mothers simply can’t wait. Deligiannidis, the director of women’s behavioral health at New York’s Zucker Hillside Hospital, worked on one of the trials for Zurzuvae and said her initial reaction to the positive results was “goosebumps.” “It was a little unreal,” she said. “Because we’re just not trained in this way to think that our therapies can work so quickly.
